SORENSON JOY, oil, acrylic, pencil, fiber

I was born in Akron , Ohio , grew up in Ft. Lauderdale , Florida and spent many of my art formative years in Boca Raton , Florida . I have been doing art work for the Mountain Breeze since 1990 and am now staff artist for the new comers, the Leestma’s. I recently completed a cartoon map of this area for their Anniversary issue. My medias of choice are oil and acrylic, but I also do watercolor and colored pencil.

My favorite subjects are people, especially children and landscapes of this beautiful area. When not working on canvas I do soft sculpture dolls on commission. These are collectible art dolls, not toys. I have dolls in many states, including Hawaii .

Opportunity has taken me to study in France, Boca Raton Museum of Art and membership in the juried Delray Art League where I took part in their Art in the Park exhibits. I am an active member of the Lake Lure Artists and try to show with them several times a year. I have studied under noted artists, my favorite being Arthur Sarnoff, one of the last living illustrators of the Wyeth period.

My dolls and artwork were singularly selected for display on the Heritage Trail, a list of North Carolina Artists. As an artist I would like to state that living in this gorgeous area we are blessed as inspiration is all around us.

I recently had a one person show, October, November, December and part of January at the Rumbling Bald Resort in Lake Lure . I did a number of life size paintings for auction for the Rutherfordton Library Children’s Unit, and am currently completing sketches for additional work for library, Lake Lure branch.
